Description: Pure white gypsum sand dunes spread over miles of desert provide a landscape that can be seen from space or, if you are not an astronout, explored on foot. Backcountry hiking/camping by permit only. Visitors can walk on nature trails or play in a designated area. Sleds are available for rent at the visitor center.

Notes: Ground fires are prohibited. Personal grills are allowed in picnic areas and pull outs along the Dunes Drive. When using personal grills, charcoal must be removed from the monument. If using one of the Monument’s grills, leave the charcoal in the grill. Only containerized fuel stoves are allowed in the designated backcountry campsites. Fire Pans, metal drums, other fire proof containers may be allowed as a condition of a Special Use Permit. These containers must be resting at least six inches above the ground.
